Star’s Poop Bags
Why Project Harmless?
Project Harmless are a relatively new addition to the poop bag market, and they take a fresh approach which redefines what a poop bag should be. Their unique water-soluble material surpasses the best biodegradable poop bags in terms of their impact on the planet and the environment.
Biodegradable poop bags won’t function as intended if they aren’t disposed of correctly. They won’t quickly decompose if they end up in a landfill (which most do) or the ocean, posing a risk to marine life.
Thanks to their innovative approach of repurposing the water-soluble material used to coat medical pills into dog poop bags, Project Harmless overcomes and solves these problems. Their poop bags will biodegrade in a landfill, and if they happen to end up in our oceans, they will quickly dissolve. They are non-toxic and microplastic-free, so they won’t endanger marine life even if ingested.
Project Harmless offer a waterproof storage tin which is complimentary with subscription plans. It keeps the poop bags safe and dry from water. It also contains a drawing of a Siberian Husky’s face, which Star particularly loves.
Project Harmless poop bags are, by a large margin, the best poop bags to use to protect the environment and marine life from plastic waste.
How it was chosen
For almost all of Star’s life, she has used Beco’s poop bags, primarily chosen for their ethical credentials. Until very recently, there were no better materials for poop bags than those offered by Beco.
Beco is a very transparent company that goes out of its way not to mislead and greenwash its poop bags. They’re one of the few brands to openly admit that neither their recycled plastic bags nor their compostable bags will degrade if they end up in a landfill. All dog waste bags disposed of in public waste bins go to a landfill.
Beco also offers compostable bags. They’re not viable for Star, but they can be fantastic if you can home-compost them correctly so that they biodegrade.
In 2017, Blue Planet II highlighted the dangers of plastic waste to the oceans and marine life. Dog poop bags contribute to this problem. This year, Star’s favourite shop, Hungry Hounds Hebrides, discovered Project Harmless poop bags at The Dog Lover Show. They solved the problems of the poop bags that came before, and Star has been using them ever since.
A small caveat
Although Project Harmless poop bags are significantly thicker than most poop bags, which is fantastic, the texture of their material isn’t the nicest. They tend to stick together and can clump up inside a pocket. So whilst they may not be the most pleasant poop bags to use, they are by far the best poop bag to use for the betterment of the planet, its environment, and marine life. It’s a small trade-off that’s easily worth it.
